Does My Caravan Need Insurance?
When it comes to car insurance, that is a requirement by law. But what if you’re towing a caravan, or have one in a fixed location? It can be difficult to know whether or not a caravan needs to be insured, especially if you’re new to the caravanning game. We’ll be answering all of your caravan insurance questions in this article; here’s everything you need to know:
Do I need insurance for my caravan?
Technically, no, it’s not a legal requirement for your caravan to have insurance. But it’s actually highly-recommended should you buy, or already have, a caravan. Whether it be for peace of mind or to protect you financially, taking out caravan insurance is one of the best things you can do. From fire, theft and water damage to scraping it along a gate post, you can rest assured that your caravan will be covered, so you don’t have to skip any of those fun-filled caravanning holidays you enjoy so much every summer.
What type of insurance cover do I need for my caravan?
Much like car insurance, you can tailor the policy to suit your budget. You should choose a caravan insurance policy that suits your lifestyle. It’s recommended that you opt for a caravan insurance policy that will cover:
- Loss or damage in the case of theft, fire, flood, storms etc
- The contents of your caravan, making sure you amend the policy if you plan on taking higher-value items with you on holiday/when the caravan is in use)
- Accidental damage that occurs when towing is in progress
- A choice of ‘new for old’ or ‘market value’
- European travel, most caravan insurance policies will cover this, but make sure yours definitely does before taking it abroad
Should I insure my caravan if it’s parked at home?
It’s a good idea to insure your caravan even if it’s parked at your home address. This is to help cover the costs should theft or damage occur while it’s parked there. Some insurance companies might require you to store your caravan at an CaSSOA-approved (Caravan Storage Site Owners) site, with some providers offering a discount if you choose to store it there instead of at your home address. This is because the site will be protected to a much higher degree than if it was parked on your driveway.
Will my car insurance cover my caravan?
No, your car insurance does not cover your caravan. The car insurance you have will only cover the vehicle that is towing the caravan and not the caravan itself. You might be able to take out a separate insurance for your caravan from the same provider, however.
What are the different types of caravan insurance?
Typically, there are three different types of insurance that someone can take out for their caravan:
- Tourer or touring caravan insurance – covers caravans that can only be transported when towed behind another vehicle
- Static caravan insurance – this covers your caravan if it sits in a fixed location, like a seaside resort or holiday park site. If, at any point, you wish to move your static caravan to another location, then make sure the insurance policy covers something called ‘goods in transit’
- Trailer tent and folding caravan insurance – contents that are stored within a folding caravan or trailer tent are far less secure, so if you wish to insure those, you might find it more difficult than insuring a standard
Will the contents of my caravan be insured?
Depending on the type of cover you have, the contents of your caravan may well be insured should the worst happen. Make sure you check the policy before agreeing to take out the insurance, just to ensure it’s offering you need. It would also be worth checking your home insurance policy to see if your items are covered if they’re taken outside of the house. There’s no need to insure the same products twice if they’re already covered under another policy.
